Brian Tremain Bursary 2017

Many of you will have known our dear friend and colleague Brian Tremain who sadly passed away in 2015. Brian was a founder member of AHFAP and to mark the continuous involvement and service he very much enjoyed over many years, Brian’s family have generously sponsored an annual travel bursary scheme to be launched in his name. It will be known as The Brian Tremain Bursary and will have the specific purpose to help fund a member of the association to attend the AHFAP annual general meeting and conference. I am honoured therefore to announce that we are able to make the Brian Tremain Bursary this year for the first time, following a pilot scheme in 2015. A bursary will be awarded to one successful candidate to help toward the costs of attending the 2017 AHFAP Annual Conference to be held on 6th November at the Wellcome Genome Campus, Conference Centre, at Hinxton near Cambridge. The award is to cover actual costs and will be to a maximum value of £250.

Information for applicants:

A written application of no more than 1000 words to be submitted, setting out why you should be awarded the bursary to attend this conference and how attendance will support you academically, professionally and/or personally. Also, if currently employed, please provide evidence of how your organisation or business would benefit from your attendance.

As a successful recipient of the bursary you will be offered the opportunity to make a short presentation at the 2018 AHFAP Annual Conference on your experience at the 2017 conference. If you don’t wish to give a presentation or are unable to attend the 2018 conference we would ask you to submit a written report for distribution to AHFAP members electronically.

Judging submissions

A reviewing panel consisting of four AHFAP members plus a member of Brian’s family will review and discuss all submissions, arriving at a decision to offer the bursary to one successful applicant. In the event of no clear winner, the Chair’s decision is final.

How to apply

Please email documents to – Submissions will only be accepted from fully paid up members of the Association, either personal membership or through organisation membership. Submissions to be received by the 31 August 2017.


Please include:

  • Your name
  • A short paragraph about yourself, e.g. background, career history, student or retired etc.
  • A short description of your organisation or business if you have one and your position in that organisation.
  • Your contact details including address of your organisation, business or college.
  • Your written submission

The successful recipient will be contacted by mid September. In order to receive the bursary, the recipient will be asked to provide receipts for pre booked travel and a proposal for reasonable subsistence costs. The value of the bursary will include a ticket for day one of the conference.
